PALMERSTON – The Palmerston Posse have punched their ticket to nationals.
The local juvenile boys broomball team finished third at a qualifier tournament this year and will be going to St. Laurent, Quebec April 11-14 for a chance at a Canadian championship.
No players on the roster of 16- to 19-year-olds have been to nationals before, but the coaching staff likes their chances.
“They play solid broomball,” said assistant coach Calvin Subject. “It’s a very promising team, multiple levels of talent from our oldest players to our youngest pickups.”
The regular roster of 16 players can be augmented by four pickups for the big tournament.
The Posse went 3-2 at the juvenile national qualifier in Barrie Nov. 25-26. The Valley Gamblers handed them both of their losses in the double-elimination format.
Palmerston defeated the Windsor Devils 2-1 in their opener on Friday night. Jeremiah Weidemann was the hero in game one by scoring the winning goal in the dying seconds from Jordan Weidemann and Brad Van Bakel. Jo. Weidemann scored the previous goal from Van Bakel.
The Posse lost to the Gamblers 5-2 early on Saturday morning in game two, leaving no room for error. Brett Hamilton and Je. Weidemann scored in the loss. Daniel Subject, Jo. Weidemann and Brandon Smith assisted.
The club destroyed the Mildmay Devils 6-0 with Jo. Weidemann scoring twice and Je. Weidemann, Andrew Hamilton, Scott Lammers and Tim Grotenhuis also hitting the back of the net....please read more in this weeks Minto Express
