One person is dead and two others injured following a head-on collision in the early hours of Thursday, Feb. 11, on Highway 23 just north of Palmerston.
Katherine McNally, 21, who lived on the outskirts of Palmerston, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 17-year-old Alexander Maxwell of Arthur Township was treated at Palmerston and District Hospital and later air-lifted to Hamilton General Hospital with what police describe as non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and sole occupant of the other vehicle, David King, 24, of Palmerston, was taken to Palmerston and District Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say that at about 1:30 a.m., a County of Wellington OPP officer was patrolling northbound on Highway 23. The officer was in the process of making a U-turn to stop a southbound 2006 Chevy Impala for a Highway Traffic Act infraction. After turning on the emergency lights, the officer saw the Impala cross into the northbound lane and collide head-on with the car driven by McNally.
Highway 23 remained closed until almost noon, while OPP Technical Collision Investigators, along with the County of Wellington OPP Criminal Investigation Unit, investigated.
The province’s Special Investigation Unit was contacted, and members were at the scene to conduct a parallel investigation. The SIU is involved because the OPP officer was in the process of pulling over a vehicle when the crash occurred.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the unit at 416-622-2290 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2290.
As of press time, no charges had been laid.
