Norwell students are fundraising to send money to Haiti to contribute to the relief effort there, following the devastating earthquake of Jan. 12.
On Feb. 11 at 8 p.m., Sins of the Mother, a student directed and performed play, will be performed at the Norgan theatre with all the proceeds being donated to the Red Cross.
Morgan McLean, president of the arts council at Norwell, explained that Norwell students are feeling a close connection with the disaster in Haiti as Jordan Yutzy, a Grade 12 student from Norwell, travelled to the country in September and plans to stay there until June. He and his family are part of a missionary group in Haiti. While they are all fine, the stories he’s told and the pictures that Norwell students have seenhave prompted a massive fundraising campaign throughout Norwell.
McLean said the play was going to be performed anyway, and the students wanted the proceeds to help those who need it so desperately. The play by Tony Bevany Morinelli is about a mother with alcoholism, and how it affects the entire family. The play has been entered in the Sears competition later in February. It’s directed by Shannon Thuell, and stars Amanda Knoll, Erica Zantinge, Reilly Schneider, Sarah Jewell and Elizabeth McPhail.
Tickets are available by contacting McLean at morgan.mclean@hotmail.com or at the door. All proceeds plus any additional donations received will be sent to the Red Cross.
