From the left are Mayor David Anderson, Lisa Veld (Minto Minor Hockey and Palmerston Junior Broomball), Teresa Teune (Harriston Soccer Club and Skating Club), and Perth-Wellington MPP John Wilkinson; absent - Darren Foerter (Harriston Curling Club and Minto Minor Hockey), Greg Mallet (Palmerston and North Perth Soccer, Baseball and Hockey).
Volunteer in Sports Award recipients were recognized at a reception honouring them for their tireless efforts in support of our young athletes in an event Jan. 13 at the Stratford City Hall auditorium.
Perth Wellington MPP John Wilkinson, Perth-Wellington municipal leaders, nominees, their families, and nominators were joined by Eddie Matthews, CJCS radio show host who emceed the event.
Said Wilkinson, “I am delighted that my office received so many worthy nominations. Each of our successful recipients is to be congratulated for the many selfless hours of volunteer service they provide for our youth and their favourite sports organizations. These special people spend their time helping our young athletes reach their dreams and potential - and they make us so proud. The awards are a special way for our communities to simply say thank you.”
Sports volunteers each contribute an average of 143 hours per year to sport events alone. According to a Sport Alliance Ontario report from 2005, this translates into 167 million hours.
Four Minto volunteers were among those honoured. Teresa Teune accepted her award from Wilkinson and Mayor David Anderson. As a lifetime resident of the Town of Minto, Teune had been an active sports volunteer for many years. Whether tirelessly involving herself with the Harriston Division Soccer Club as an executive and coach, or with the Harriston Skating Club, Teresa is a great asset to the Harriston-Minto sports community. Nominated by Miles Shiels and Al Carr, Teune has not only inspired her own children, but also hundreds of youth involved in athletics in the Town of Minto.
Lisa Veld also accepted her award from Wilkinson and Anderson. For the past eight years, Veld has dedicated herself to the Minto Optimist Club, wearing many hats within the organization. Whether acting as president in the executive, running the concession at tournaments to the annual fishing derby, president of the Palmerston Junior Broomball association, or as a parent volunteer with the PMD Minor Hockey Association, Lisa is always ready to lend a helping hand. Nominated by Al Carr for her dedication to her community, Veld will surely continue to tirelessly volunteer in the Town of Minto sports community.
Al Walter accepted his award from Wilkinson and Mapleton mayor John Green. All year round, Walter can be found accessing the sports facilities at the Palmerston and District Community Centre. From overseeing a six-team ball hockey league in the summer months to acting as an executive with the Junior Broomball program, to establishing an annual Junior Broomball tournament, or serving on the Central Western Ontario Broomball Association, he is always active in his sporting community. Nominated by Al Carr, Walter’s dedication and leadership has provided the Minto community great opportunities and sporting growth.
Darren Foerter (Harriston Curling Club and Minto Minor Hockey), and Greg Mallet (Palmerston and North Perth Soccer, Baseball and Hockey) were not present for the presentations and will receive their awards at a later date.
