The Palmerston 81’s treated home town fans to a 6-4 victory against the Lucknow Lancers on Jan. 9.
The Palmerston 81’s ruled during the first period. The team, with Scott Walls in goal, was unbeatable and the Trains did all the scoring. The first was a short-handed goal scored by Brent “Tiny” Cochrane assisted by Mike Lankshear; the second was by Dan Richardson from Jeremy Weishar.
Lucknow came out gunning in the second and scored early, Bill McGrail from Reck Andrew and Adam McDonald, but the 81’s came back with a pair of unanswered goals. The first was by Brad Kenny from Chris Sebastian, and the second by Ryan Black from Kevin Beirnes and Derrick Givens. This put Palmerston ahead 4-1. But the game was far from over.
The third period was wild, with everything including end-to-end rushes, hard hits and even a penalty shot that Lucknow scored on. McGrail opened scoring for Lucknow, assisted by Cory Hamilton and McDonald, then Andrew beat Palmerston’s Walls midway through, assisted by Hamilton again. Palmerston came back with a goal by newcomer Wes Miller, assists going to Richardson and Tiny Cochrane, but Lucknow kept the pressure on and Mark Stanley scored on the penalty shot, making the score 5-4. Palmerston’s Black closed out the game, scoring the final goal assisted by Sebastian – two goals for the night by Black.
The 81’s travel to Durham on Friday, Jan. 15, 8 p.m. to take on the Thundercats, and are back home the next night, Jan. 16, to host Ripley, 8 p.m. start.
